Appearing to float amidst the natural surroundings of Grün Resort Uluwatu - a family-run nature focused luxury boutique resort in Uluwatu, Bali - The Octagon is a tropical-fusion restaurant, co-working and event venue by Stilt Studios that departs from architectural norms with a pilotis-supported octagonal shape that maximizes spatial efficiency while minimizing its ecological footprint.
Open plan in layout, with low, relaxed furniture, the floating octagonal form encourages natural airflow and enhances an overall feeling of spaciousness. A sense of connection to nature is enhanced with large glass sliding doors, a central circular skylight, strategically positioned openings, and, most dramatically, an expansive decking system encircling the upper floor of the Octagon, offering 70 square meters of covered exterior space where boundaries blur between inside and outside.
The architecture of the building features a harmonious blend of glass, steel, and reclaimed wood, resulting in a tropical/industrial appearance. The use of steel not only brings a contemporary elegance but also ensures durability and recyclability. Alongside this, the inclusion of reclaimed wood brings a touch of the vernacular to the structure, while additionally reducing the need for new timber and thus reducing material use.
In alignment with Stilt Studios’ ethos of ‘lightening the impact on the earth,’ the project includes primarily prefabricated building elements and responsibly sourced materials, including as much wood as possible. The optimized construction process minimizes waste thanks to prefabrication, saving time and reducing waste and the carbon associated with the building’s construction.
“The development of Grün Resort Uluwatu exhibited a profound commitment to harmoniously coexist with nature rather than impose on it. We enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to demonstrate this in the construction of a substantial restaurant and common space with The Octagon. Our primary objective was to establish an exceptional space that fosters a connection with the natural forestry environment.” says Prayoga Arya, Lead Architectural Designer at Stilt Studios.
